OUR STORY

Paul Adriaansen, owner of Spud Plains Farms, was born and raised in the Wellwood area. He grew up alongside six brothers and 1 sister on the family farm. The boys divided the land from their father, Tony Adriaansen, in 1987 and eventually Paul bought his own 800 acres out of the business planting his first solo crop in 1999. 29 years ago Paul married his wife Kim in Carberry, Manitoba. Paul and Kim are parents to 3 daughters, Johanna, Teal and Victoria, and son, Griffin. Teal, Tori and Griffin are all pursing lives in the farm.

The Farm

Spud Plains Farms plants 20,000 acres of crop per season on their farmable land which sprawls over south-western Manitoba from the banks of the Assiniboine River near Shilo, through the sandy hills of Carberry, north into the dark soil of Neepawa, and most recently through the rocky beds of Rivers. We grow over 6,000 acres of potatoes including ranger russet, russet burbank and seed across 11,000 acres of irrigated land. Rotation crops include canola, wheat, barley, rye, and corn.

Self-sufficiency is a Priority

We are proud to host in-house mechanics, electricians, a full time agronomist, as well as do our own building contracting. Additionally owning an aerial spray plane along ensures we can control pests and diseases, and apply chemical in a timely manner.

Fertilizer is blended on site and applied through 2 ground sprayers and a Valmar spreader before seeding as well as during seeding through the potato and corn planters.

Our Carberry yardsite is 15 miles south of the main yard and hosts grain and fertilizer storage as well as 2 X squarefoot potato sheds.

Embracing Technology

The farm has always been willing to invest in new technology. We work with GPS systems in the tractor to ensure row accuracy. Potato storages are temperature and humidity controlled virtually - everything from CO2 to oxygen flushes. Further, monitoring irrigation equipment online gives instant feedback when problems arise. Field information is logged into a cell phone app daily so we can constantly track what stage the field is at in regards to planting, irrigation, harvest dates as well as fertilizer application and amount.

Land Development

As part of our operation Spud Plains does a lot construction work for our own land as well as contracting to others. By implementing dozing, scraping, land development, track hoe, debris and cleanup we have developed many acres of 'unfarmable' land into profitable, farmable fields.

One of the many land redevelopment projects.
